I really don’t know what it is about lace. It calls to me: beckons, really, like one of those secret thrills that you would love to lose yourself in, but can’t quite let yourself go there, you know? When I gaze at a beautifully knit lace shawl, the complexity of the pattern makes my heart beat a bit faster, and I find it difficult to stay away. Then I succumb, quickly becoming lost in laceintricacies. Several rows later — BAM-O. Like someone slapped a big-ass bumper sticker on my forehead that shouts “I B STOOPID.” The weight of what I’ve taken on hits me like a ton of wooly bricks, and I break out in a sweat, placing a life-line every five or six rows, just in case I really muck things up.
Yet, the end result will be worth it, I know! So I persist. For years, even. For example, here is Susan Lawrence’s fabulous Spring Things shawl that I’ve been knitting from my own handspun for two years now. It’s about one-quarter of the way finished. But oh, it’s SO going to be worth the time, the care, and all those lifelines!
I tell myself that, if I knit enough lace, the sweaty palms and feelings of panic that I get when going over a pattern chart will eventually subside. It’ll happen. Either that, or I’m gonna knit myself into a laceweight-induced coma. Peace out, my friends.

Thanks, you guys. I think it’ll be worth it, too. Hope to get it done before summer gets here. Heh.
