engaging the superhero

I’ve been blogging for over six years now, and it’s been a great experience. The regularity of my posting has decreased over the last year, but there’s good reason. A girl has gotta sleep sometime, you know?

This last year has been a weird one. A whole new life has been discovered, and to say I’m surprised is putting it mildly. It’s like a bumper sticker I saw the other day “Everyone dies, but not everyone lives.” Well, my dear friends, I’ve been packing a lot of living in, every chance I get.

There have been a lot of movies in recent years that feature superheros like Spiderman, Batman and Superman. The definition ’superhero’ is in the process of being rewritten, for me, anyway. I think it’s time that each of us allow ourselves to become empowered, and therefore be extraordinary. All it really takes is a costume–something that makes you feel SUPER human. Take these people, for example. A typical middle-aged couple who have young adult and teenage children, stressful jobs and are generally a bit worn out each week by the time Friday rolls around.

Don’t they look like fun? Yeah, I know. They look like they could use a month long vacation in the Bahamas, but hey–who couldn’t?

So anyway, back to my point. Take this tired ol’ couple and slap some motorcycle leathers and doo-rags on them, and put their worn-out asses on a motorcycle. After 10 miles on the road, their smiles return. Their hearts are beating a bit faster. With each passing mile the transfiguration continues, until ‘lo and behold, it’s complete, and a strange force has taken hold. Suddenly they feel energized, invigorated…ALIVE! SUPER-human! The stress of the work week melts away, and a desire to live life to the fullest takes it’s place. It’s almost like flipping a switch. Exit the tired, middle-aged parents, and enter the middle-aged bad-ass bikers. Damn, life is good.

What is your superhero costume? What makes you feel alive, energized, and ready to kick ass? A physician friend of mine has a sailboat. When the stress of his work becomes too much, he dons his sailing gear and heads for Puget Sound and the Pacific beyond. He says that he feels invincible on the water—at one with the ocean. And very superhero-like. We all need some excitement in our lives–something to get the adrenaline pumping. What does it for you?

Am I to assume that my knitting needles don’t count?

You two look so fabulous together! How wonderful you found your own superhero. Everyone should have one. ;-)
Knitting, hiking, friends, my own superhero…best things in life.

Thanks, Margene! You’re absolutely right–everyone should be their OWN superhero. Which you most definitely ARE, grrlfriend! Look at all you’ve gone through this year–and have come through STRONGER and BETTER than ever! xoxo

You’ve got me thinking. I know there will be coffee involved with my costume, but I guess I’m still working on it. I’ll get back to you on this one. I love the looks on your faces in the motorcycle mama photo. Bliss Baby!
