I was wrong

click me!I've always shied away from colorwork. Others around the knit blogs have been doing it for ages, telling me how easy it can be, but I didn't believe them. Yet I would secretly go admire the work of Nanette Blanchard, lusting over the colorful gloves she creates. Since I'm on the fence right now on the Berroco Bag (thanks for your help, everyone!), I decided to sink my needles into a project that is outside of my comfort zone, and admit my yearning for Fair Isle.

Googling for an online Fair Isle beginners pattern, I found Nanopant's Fair Isle Hat. This pattern is wonderfully written for the Fair Isle Newbie, but I cringed when I saw that I would have to use....gulp....CHARTS. I've screwed up a few times, but since this is my practice project, I'm not really worried about it. Since it doesn't take much yarn, this project is perfect for stash reduction!

The yarn I'm using is Bergere de France Irland, a blend of 80% superwash wool, 13% acrylic and 7% viscose, from very generous Amy's GSRP project. I wish I had used something else, as this yarn is real tweedy, and makes the fabric look like there are pieces of lint all over it. Not good for a color pattern. Oh well, knit and learn, right?

P.S. See, Marcia? Maybe someday I'll even tackle lace, eh? No---let's not go crazy here...

Good job in knitting out of your comfort zone and you certainly wouldn't know it to look at it ~ it's very pretty! Sometimes it is so good to be wrong :D

You are doing great with the colors. I give you credit for tackling this difficult task.

Chris ~ Thanks! It's been pretty fun to knit Continental *and* English at the same time. As for lace---um---we'll see about that. ;)

Margene ~ Girlfriend, as much gorgeous lace as you churn out, I would think that Fair Isle would come SO easily to you. This project is a really well written simple pattern, and Nanopants provides color charts.

Tiffany ~ You're right--sometimes it *is* good to be wrong! I'm feeling really good about it right now, but we'll see what happens once I start decreasing for the top of the hat. Hmmmm.

Cindy! C&C Knitting Works Cindy? Thanks for stopping by, you sweetie---I miss you!

Knitting Maven ~ Thank you so much. I must admit to wanting to try different color variations, and see how they alter the look of the pattern. This could prove to be very addictive!

Hi:

I found this when I was poking around in my referral logs, and I'm so excited to see a different version of my hat being knitted up! (Sorry about the charts--I would've been much more likely to mess you up if I'd tried to write everything out, and it'd been a learning experience for me, too.)

Anyways, I'm glad you like the pattern. It looks great so far!
